Starting a cosmetic brand in Sri Lanka usually means making packaging decisions before you know how well your product will sell. Many new brands worry they will have to buy thousands of bottles up front. At Snak Holdings there is no minimum order quantity on standard bottles, so you can buy the packaging you need for your first batch, test the market and reorder as you grow.
This guide answers the questions startups ask us most often, from which bottle and pump to use to how many bottles to order for a first launch. Each answer comes from the Snak Holdings team, with practical detail and links to products that are in stock now.
Quick answer
- Start with the product: its texture, thickness and how it is applied decide the bottle, jar or tube.
- Keep sizes simple: launch with a few practical sizes that fit your selling price, not a long list.
- Plastic or glass: plastic is lightweight and easier to transport; glass looks more premium.
- Match the closure to how thick the product is and how much is used each time.
- Don’t overstock: there is no minimum order quantity on standard bottles, so order for your first production run and reorder as sales grow.
1. Match the packaging to your product
The right bottle type depends on the product: its texture, its thickness and how the customer applies it. A thin facial oil, a rich body cream and a face wash need very different containers, even if they sit side by side in the same range.
Before you look at packaging, write down three things about each product: is it a liquid, a lotion, a gel, a cream or a solid; does the customer pour it, pump it, squeeze it or scoop it; and roughly how much do they use each time? The table below shows where most startup products land.
| Product | Usual packaging | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Serums, facial oils, tinctures | Glass dropper bottle | Glass Dropper Bottles |
| Hair, body and massage oils | Bottle with a screw cap or flip top | Oil Bottles, Plastic Cosmetic Bottles |
| Lotions, shampoos, liquid soaps | Bottle with a lotion pump | Glass Lotion Bottles, Plastic Cosmetic Bottles |
| Face and body mists, body sprays | Bottle with a spray pump | Acrylic Bottles, Deodorant Bottles |
| Creams, balms, masks, scrubs | Jar | Cosmetic Jars |
| Face wash, gels, cleansers | Squeeze tube with a flip top | Face Wash Tubes, Snak Tubes |
| Lip balm, mascara, lip gloss | Twist-up or applicator tube | Lip Balm Tubes, Mascara & Lip Gloss Tubes |
If you are launching a serum or facial oil, our guide on how to choose the right dropper bottle for serums and skincare goes into glass colour, dropper type and size in more detail.
2. Choose a few sizes, not many
Work out the size from your target selling price and the quantity you want to offer the customer. A size that is too large pushes the price above what your first customers will pay; one that is too small may not feel like good value.
Startups should begin with a few practical sizes rather than many options. Every extra size means another bottle, another label and more stock to manage. A common pattern is one retail size per product plus a small sample or travel size.
| Size | Typical startup use | Example packaging |
|---|---|---|
| 5ml – 15ml / 5g – 15g | Samples, testers, lip and eye products | 5ml Plastic Chinese Jars, Lip Balm Tubes, 10ml Mascara & Lip Gloss Tubes |
| 30ml – 50ml / 30g – 50g | Serums, face creams, premium products | Box Bottles, Amber Cosmetic Bottles (30ml), Acrylic Jars, Glass Cosmetic Jars |
| 100ml – 200ml | Lotions, oils, face wash, toners | Glass Lotion Bottles, Oil Bottles, Face Wash Tubes, Plastic Cosmetic Bottles |
| 250ml and above | Body care, haircare, family and value sizes | Plastic Cosmetic Bottles (300ml, 500ml, 1L), Aloe Vera Tube (300ml) |
3. Plastic or glass?
Both have advantages, and many brands use both in the same range. Plastic is lightweight and easier to transport. Glass gives a more premium appearance. The right choice depends on your product, where you sell it and how you want the brand to look.
| Plastic | Glass | |
|---|---|---|
| Main advantage | Lightweight and easier to transport | More premium appearance |
| Good fit for | Everyday skincare, haircare, body care, online orders that travel by courier | Serums, facial oils, premium creams, gift products |
| Things to think about | Choose a colour and finish that keeps the product looking premium enough for your price | Heavier to send, so pack it well for delivery |
| Examples | Plastic Cosmetic Bottles, Plastic Cosmetic Jars, Acrylic Bottles | Glass Lotion Bottles, Glass Cosmetic Jars, Maraska Bottles |
Some styles come in both. Amber Cosmetic Bottles, Box Bottles and Oil Bottles are available in glass or PET, so you can keep one look across products and pick the material that suits each one.

4. Pick the right pump or closure
Match the pump to the product’s viscosity (how thick it is) and the amount dispensed per use. A thick body lotion needs a different pump from a light facial mist. Lotion pumps, treatment pumps, mist sprayers and other closures each suit different products.
- Lotion pump: for lotions, creams, gels, shampoos and liquid soaps, where the customer wants a generous amount each press. See Lotion Pumps (20mm, 24mm and 28mm necks).
- Treatment pump: for serums and lighter creams where a smaller, controlled amount is applied. Ask us on WhatsApp for current options.
- Spray pump or mist sprayer: for face mists, toners, hair sprays and body sprays. See Spray Pumps (20mm neck).
- Flip top cap: for oils, shampoos and gels that customers pour or squeeze. See Plastic Flip Top Caps (18mm, 20mm and 24mm necks).
- Press-on cap: a neat finishing cap for compatible bottles. See Press-On Caps in gold, silver or white.
- Dropper: for serums and oils used a few drops at a time. See the Glass Dropper Bottles range.
The neck size of the bottle and the closure must match. For example, Glass Lotion Bottles have a 28mm neck, and Oil Bottles come with 18mm or 20mm necks. When you order, tell us which bottle you are using and we will confirm the closure that fits. You can browse every closure in Pumps & Caps.
5. Create your own look from the standard range
You do not need custom moulds or a large order to have packaging that looks like your brand. Because the Snak Holdings catalogue is large, you can mix and match bottles, closures, colours and finishes from the standard range to create your own combination, with no minimum order quantity on standard bottles.
Here is how small brands use the standard range to stand out:
- Colour: choose one colour family for the whole range. Plastic Cosmetic Bottles come in amber, black, clear or white, and Plastic Cosmetic Jars in colours from pearl white to pink, green and yellow.
- Finish: frosted, glossy or matte changes the feel completely. Glass Cosmetic Jars come in all three, and Aluminum Jars in glossy or matte.
- Closure colour: a gold or silver cap on a plain bottle looks more premium. Press-On Caps come in gold, silver and white, and Flip Top Caps in five colours.
- Shape: a Box Bottle or Maraska Bottle looks different from the usual round bottle without any custom tooling.
Can you print your logo on the bottle? Yes. Logo printing is available on request. Direct printing gives a professional, premium look and often removes the need for a separate sticker. Fully custom OEM packaging is also available on request. Message us on WhatsApp with your idea and we will explain what is possible.
6. Spend where it matters
Should you choose expensive packaging at the start? Not necessarily. Match your packaging to your brand positioning and budget, balancing appearance, function, quality and cost.
In practice, that means deciding which product is your hero. If one serum or cream will carry the brand, it is worth giving it the more premium bottle, finish or cap. Everyday products such as face wash, shampoo or body lotion can use practical plastic packaging that keeps your costs and shipping weight down. A consistent colour and label design will tie the range together even when the materials differ.
7. Order for your first launch, not for next year
How many bottles should you buy for your first launch? Don’t overstock before you know what sells. Start with quantities that match your first production and increase as the business grows.
A simple way to work it out is to start from the batch you plan to make. If your first batch of body lotion fills a set number of 200ml bottles, order that number plus a few spares for testing and breakage. Once you see which products and sizes sell, reorder those and drop the ones that don’t. Because there is no minimum order quantity on standard bottles, you are not forced to buy more than your first run needs, and all listed products are in stock.
Checks to make before you order

Before you place an order, go through this list for every product in your range:
- Bottle capacity: it holds the amount you plan to sell, with a little headspace.
- Material: plastic or glass, chosen for your product, price and delivery method.
- Neck size: recorded for each bottle, so you order the right closures.
- Pump or closure compatibility: the closure fits the neck and seals properly.
- Product compatibility: fill a sample with your real formula and leave it for a few weeks to check for leaks or changes.
- Dispensing performance: the pump, spray or dropper delivers the right amount without clogging or dripping.
- Printing or decoration options: your label fits, or logo printing has been discussed.
- Minimum order quantity: confirmed for every item before you plan your budget.
- Final cost: bottle, closure, printing and delivery added together per unit.
The one rule to remember
Our advice to every startup is simple: don’t choose a bottle just because it looks beautiful. The best cosmetic packaging looks good, works properly with your formula, represents your brand and fits your budget. If a bottle only does the first of those, keep looking.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum order quantity for cosmetic packaging?
There is no minimum order quantity on standard bottles at Snak Holdings. Startups and small brands can order the number of bottles they need for their first production run and reorder as they grow.
What is the best packaging for a new skincare brand?
It depends on the product. Thin serums and oils usually go in dropper bottles, lotions in pump bottles, creams and balms in jars, and face washes and gels in squeeze tubes. Start with the texture, thickness and how the product is applied, then choose the packaging.
Should a startup use plastic or glass bottles?
Both work. Plastic is lightweight and easier to transport, which helps if you sell online or deliver across the country. Glass gives a more premium appearance. Many brands use glass for their hero product and plastic for everyday items.
Can I print my logo on cosmetic bottles?
Yes, logo printing is available on request. Printing directly on the bottle gives a professional, premium look and often removes the need for a separate sticker. Share your design on WhatsApp and the team will explain the options for your bottle.
Can I customize my packaging without a large order?
Yes. The simplest way is to mix and match from the standard range: choose the bottle, pump or cap, colour and finish that suit your brand, with no minimum order quantity on standard bottles. Fully custom OEM packaging is also available on request.
How many bottles should I order for my first launch?
Order enough for your first production batch plus a few spares for testing. Don’t overstock before you know what sells; increase your quantities as the business grows.
